Possible Opponents for Canelo: Berlanga in Preparation

According to ESPN journalist Salvador Rodriguez, Puerto Rican boxer Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) may face undisputed super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs).

"Edgar Berlanga has informed his team that they need to prepare for a fight with Canelo. There has been no official statement from Canelo's team yet," Rodriguez wrote. Berlanga is the mandatory challenger for the WBA title held by the Mexican champion.

Recently, the promotional company AGON Sports announced an agreement for a fight between Saul and IBF mandatory challenger William Scull (22-0, 9 KOs). However, it later emerged that this fight might not happen next, as Scull's camp could allow Alvarez to have another fight first, receiving a step-aside fee.

There have also been reports that Canelo might relinquish the IBF title to face a different opponent. Among the contenders for a fight with the undisputed champion are David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) under the WBC, and the holder of the WBA, WBC, and WBO titles in welterweight (up to 66.7 kg) Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) as part of a 5 vs. 5 boxing event between American and Mexican fighters.

Edgar Berlanga last fought in February, knocking out Padraig McCrory (18-1, 9 KOs). Saul Alvarez defended his status as the undisputed champion in May, winning a unanimous decision against Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs).
