The promotional company AGON Sports announced an agreement for a fight between undisputed super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) and IBF mandatory challenger William Scull (22-0, 9 KOs).
However, AGON Sports promoters later revealed that despite reaching an agreement with Canelo's representatives, the fight might not be next. Scull has hinted on social media that he might step aside, allowing Alvarez to take another fight in exchange for a step-aside fee.
There had been previous discussions about Canelo possibly vacating the IBF title to pursue another opponent. Potential candidates for a bout with the undisputed champion include WBA contender Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) and WBC challenger David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs).
A standout option remains a mega-fight against WBA, WBC, and WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs), planned to headline an ambitious 5 vs. 5 boxing event between American and Mexican fighters.
Turki Alalshikh, head of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia, aims to organize this event by the end of 2024 or early 2025 in New York, Las Vegas, or Los Angeles.
Other matchups for the event could include Caleb Plant vs. Jaime Munguia, Shakur Stevenson vs. Isaac Cruz, Luis Alberto Lopez vs. Brandon Figueroa, and Stephen Fulton vs. Luis Nery.
Canelo last fought in May against Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs), successfully defending his status as the undisputed champion with a unanimous decision victory.
