According to ESPN, negotiations between WBA lightweight champion (up to 61.2 kg) Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) and IBF and IBO titleholder Vasyl Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) have ceased.
The unification bout was planned for November in Las Vegas, but Lomachenko decided to take a break until the end of 2024.
Sources indicate that Lomachenko was in Los Angeles this week to weigh his options and consider the offer to fight Davis.
Now, the potential fall opponents for Gervonta include a rematch with WBA super lightweight champion (up to 63.5 kg) Isaac Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs), a fight with William Zepeda (31-0, 27 KOs), who is ranked first in all major organizations, and a megafight with WBC titleholder Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs).
Previously, Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas stated that his client lacks motivation, wants to spend more time with his family, and won’t return to the ring until the end of the year. Davis’s co-trainer Kenny Ellis reacted to Klimas's words by claiming that Lomachenko is done with boxing.
In June, Gervonta Davis defended his title and handed Frank Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) his first career loss by knocking him out in the 8th round. In May, Vasyl Lomachenko defeated George Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) by technical knockout in the 11th round to become the IBF and IBO champion.
