Founder and head of the promotional company Top Rank, Bob Arum, explained why IBF and IBO titleholder Vasyl Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) will not return to the ring in 2024.
Arum cited the ongoing war in Ukraine, which is under constant attacks and bombardments from Russia, as the primary reason for Lomachenko's decision. The promoter mentioned that the Ukrainian boxer plans to return in early 2025.
"We will see him again. Lomachenko made that clear. He doesn't want to fight until the end of the year – it's legitimate, it’s about Ukraine and his family.
The next opponent? From Lomachenko's perspective, it could be Gervonta Davis. He's earned his money and saved it," said Arum.
Recently, it was announced that the bout between Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) will not take place in 2024. Davis' co-trainer, Kenny Ellis, is convinced that Loma has finished his boxing career.
In June, Gervonta Davis defended his title and handed Frank Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) his first career defeat, knocking out his opponent in the 8th round. In May, Vasiliy Lomachenko defeated George Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) by technical knockout in the 11th round to become the IBF and IBO champion.
