The World Boxing Association (WBA) has sanctioned a fight between undisputed super bantamweight champion (up to 55.3 kg) Naoya Inoue (27-0, 24 KOs) and Murodjon Akhmadaliev (12-1, 9 KOs).
The organization has informed both parties that they have 30 days to negotiate, with a deadline of July 14.
According to the rules, the champion must defend the title against the top contender within nine months from the date of winning the championship. Inoue won the title on December 26, 2023, so his next mandatory defense must take place no later than September 25, 2024. If the parties do not reach an agreement, a purse bid will be announced.
In May, Naoya Inoue experienced the first knockdown of his career but ultimately defeated Luis Nery by technical knockout in the 6th round. Murodjon Akhmadaliev last fought in December of last year, winning against Kevin Gonzalez by technical knockout in the 8th round.
It was previously reported that the Head of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia, Turki Alalshikh, is interested in hosting more fights in the lighter weight categories in Saudi Arabia.
This includes super lightweight (up to 63.5 kg), lightweight (up to 61.2 kg), and below. Turki plans to visit Japan to try and persuade Inoue to fight in Saudi Arabia.
