Stevenson Fight Canceled: Reactions from the Fighter and Promoter

American lightweight world champion (up to 61.2 kg) Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) shared his thoughts after a hand injury forced the cancellation of his fight against British boxer Joe Cordina (17-1, 9 KOs).

"I’m definitely disappointed that I won’t be able to fight on October 12. I was in great shape during training camp and was ready to put on a show next month against Joe Cordina. But I have to listen to the doctor and get these injuries treated immediately, so I can come back stronger than ever at the start of 2025," Stevenson said.

Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn provided more details on Shakur’s injury.

"He injured his hand last night after sparring, tearing a tendon in the joint, and had to undergo surgery immediately. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to fight Joe Cordina on October 12 and won’t return until early 2025. He went straight in for surgery, and I hope everything goes well so he can get back to work as soon as possible.

He’s really disappointed. Obviously, he was looking forward to fighting as part of Riyadh Season, but he needs to take care of this. He can't keep fighting. As I’ve said, a quick surgery and back to work in 2025," Hearn stated.

The fight between Shakur Stevenson and Joe Cordina was originally scheduled for October 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of the undercard for the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol event, but the champion’s injury led to the cancellation.
