American WBC lightweight titleholder (up to 61.2 kg) Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) has named the potential promotional companies he is considering for future collaborations. According to Shakur, he will choose between Floyd Mayweather’s Mayweather Promotions and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
"I feel only love and respect for Floyd. He has talked to me a lot and helped me… I think Eddie Hearn is one of the best promoters. Top Rank has ESPN. But in terms of promotion, Eddie Hearn is the best promoter," Stevenson said.
It’s worth noting that Shakur declined a new offer from Top Rank, and his preliminary contract ended on July 7th, making him a free agent. An interesting fact: Floyd Mayweather was once a client of Bob Arum. He then bought out his contract and became the most financially successful boxer in sports history.
Matchroom head Eddie Hearn admitted he is interested in working with Stevenson.
"We definitely want to have these negotiations. In terms of promotion, I don’t think he is where he should be because what’s happening with Bob Arum and Top Rank looks like they are giving up.
I don’t necessarily blame them because when a fighter comes out and says, ‘I’m leaving after this fight,’ you don’t make them a priority, do you?
Shakur makes a lot of money. I joked with Bob, saying, ‘I’m not going to pay him the kind of money you’re paying him,’ and he told everyone. It was a joke, but there is some truth to it because the fight must bring value.
So, I might not pay Shakur that kind of money for a fight with someone you’ve never heard of, but I will pay him that money and more for big fights that truly attract attention. I think in terms of promotion, he needs to work on himself. He also needs to invest in it," Hearn said.
