On May 2nd, a press conference was held for the fight between super middleweight (up to 76,2 kg) undisputed champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) and Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs). During the event, Canelo had a verbal altercation with Oscar De La Hoya, in which Alvarez accused his former promoter of fraud.
Now, the Golden Boy Promotions founder, through his lawyer, demands that Canelo publicly apologize and retract his statements about Oscar attempting to steal money from him and Gennady Golovkin. Otherwise, they reserve the right to take legal action.
Oscar's lawyer, Ricardo Cestero, wrote that Canelo "falsely accused Oscar of a crime with the specific intention of supposedly warning other boxers not to do business with Oscar or Golden Boy."
In a statement to ESPN, Alvarez's lawyer responded, "Canelo said what he said. Alvarez checked Golden Boy's payments and found that he was owed money. GGG (Gennady Golovkin) also found a shortfall after checking."
In 2022, Golovkin filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy, claiming that he was underpaid by around $3 million for his rematch with Canelo.
