Lamont Roach Sr., father and trainer of WBA Super-Featherweight champion Lamont Roach, has expressed uncertainty surrounding the planned rematch with WBA Lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.
According to Roach Sr., their team has yet to receive any concrete update on the rescheduled date, and they remain stuck in wait-and-see mode.
“We haven’t heard anything about a new date. At one point, we were told it might be pushed back a week or two — but even that faded away. At this point, it feels like nothing is happening.
You can’t rush into this blindly. We’ve got to assess the options and figure out the best path forward. We need to be patient and make the right next move.
We’re staying ready for anything — so if we get a call with an option and a date, we’ll be close enough to fight shape. But we can’t peak right now. It’s a tough spot: from one of the biggest fights in boxing to total uncertainty.
I don’t think this fight happens anytime this year unless something drastic changes, because by now a date would’ve already been announced. We’ll see. You never know.
All those personal details about Davis — those aren’t the public’s business. No one needs to know everything going on in his life. But it has affected us, and we need clarity on our path. It’s complicated, but we’re handling it,” said Roach Sr.
The first fight between Lamont Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) and Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) took place on 1 March and ended in a majority draw.
A rematch was originally targeted for 16 August, but even before Davis’s arrest it was clear that the fight wouldn’t happen on that date. Later, tentative discussions pointed to 23 or 30 August, but no official announcement has followed.
