In an interview with Boxing Scene, former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. shared scenarios in which he sees the "interim" WBC super middleweight champion (up to 76,2 kg) David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) and former undisputed welterweight champion (up to 147 lbs) Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) defeating the undisputed super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs).
"It's a tough fight because Benavidez throws a lot of punches. Sometimes power can intervene and change the situation. The problem is, is Canelo willing to take a risk? I really doubt he will, especially now. I don't think he feels he has a reason... If he can't hurt Benavidez in the first three or four rounds, then I don't see how he wins this fight.
If anyone can do something like this [move up three weight classes and challenge Canelo], it's Crawford. So, you can't say 'no' to him. I was in his shoes once. I had to gain 33 pounds (~15 kg) to beat John Ruiz. I didn't care. I wanted to prove I was the best in P4P and did something historic that no one had ever done. Probably that's how Bud feels right now. He wants to do something historic to cement his legacy in boxing. Who doesn't want to see the best P4P of yesterday fight the best P4P of today? Who wouldn't want to see that fight? It's a mega fight. If he gains the power and weight, how can you doubt him? You can be sure – he's coming to fight, not just to get a paycheck. He will try to win the fight because that's who Bud is.
If Terence can carry the weight, it's going to be a good fight. He can box in the same style as Floyd Mayweather. He hits and doesn't get hit. If he can take a punch at that weight, he probably wins the fight."
Roy Jones Jr. (66-10, 47 KOs) last entered the ring in April of the previous year against debutant Anthony Pettis (1-0) and lost by a majority decision.
It was recently revealed that Canelo and Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) are close to signing a contract. The fight is planned to be held on May 4th in Las Vegas.
