World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman has spoken about the future of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs), who announced his retirement in January.
Sulaiman stated that while the WBC supports Fury’s decision, they are not ruling out his return to the ring. He emphasized that if Fury changes his mind, the organization would be open to considering his comeback.
"We fully support the undisputed heavyweight championship fight and will assess the situation to determine the best course of action. [Agit] Kabayel holds the WBC interim title, which he can defend. There are also other major fights—Joshua, Wilder, or even Fury himself. So many big matchups are possible.
Joshua ranks high in the WBC standings. He’s a legendary champion, and we fully support organizing the best fights.
As for Fury—he retired, as you all remember. The WBC backed him in his first fight against Wilder, and it was an incredible bout. That draw led to two more amazing fights with Wilder, setting the stage for everything we’ve witnessed over the past three to four years. What’s happening in boxing right now is a dream come true.
I spoke with Tyson. He told me he was done, and I congratulated him. He has a wonderful family, he’s a multimillionaire. But there’s something special about fighters—it’s very hard for them to walk away. Still, I’m happy for him.
If he changes his mind and attempts a comeback, I’m sure his medical evaluations will be fine, and the door remains open," Sulaiman stated.
Additionally, Sulaiman reaffirmed that the WBC will fully support Oleksandr Usyk’s fight for the undisputed heavyweight championship.
