Former world champion and current boxing analyst Chris Algieri believes Keith Thurman and Jaron Ennis could be potential next opponents for ex-champion Danny Garcia.
“Danny Garcia vs. Daniel Gonzalez was billed as ‘The Farewell to Brooklyn,’ but I don’t think it’s the last time we’ll see Garcia. I already expect him to step into the ring again.
At 37, he looked pretty good and avoided the retirement topic throughout fight week. He also didn’t make a huge payday here, so he’ll be looking to capitalize on this win.
If I know Garcia the way I think I do — he’ll look for big money fights against dangerous opponents. One fight I see, and like more than others, is a rematch with Keith Thurman, who is currently without a date after Sebastian Fundora’s injury. If he doesn’t want to take the risk of fighting another big name in the division, then there’s no point in continuing — the Gonzalez win allows him to walk away with dignity.
Another likely option is a fight with Jaron “Boots” Ennis, his fellow Philadelphia native, who would be a nightmare matchup for him. Ennis’ speed and style would make it difficult for Garcia to land the punches he relies on. But it would be a matchup of two former Welterweight champions — the past and present of Philadelphia boxing. Garcia has long been popular in his city, so a fight between them could be the best way for Ennis to secure the popularity and recognition that he and his Matchroom promoters are seeking,” wrote Algieri.
In October 2025, 37-year-old Danny Garcia (38-4, 22 KOs) knocked out Daniel Gonzalez in the fourth round. The fight was initially expected to be his last, but after the victory Garcia said he might continue his career.
