In the main event of the night on September 21, at a record-filled Wembley Stadium in London, UK, IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) decisively defeated former champion Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs).
The boxer and his team responded to the disappointing loss. Joshua addressed the question of whether he plans to continue fighting:
“Always keep your head held high. We aimed for success, but we didn’t achieve it. We made our third attempt. We are working towards making history in British boxing, and I believe we are doing that.
You might ask, do I want to keep fighting? Absolutely, I want to continue. That’s why I said, ‘We aimed for success, but we didn’t achieve it.’
What does that mean now? We’ll step back to return to the fight once again. I am a warrior,” Joshua stated.
Joshua’s trainer, Ben Davison, added: “My team and I received plenty of praise for the successful performances that Joshua has shown, so it’s important to take responsibility for an unsuccessful performance as well.”
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn also addressed the possibility of a fight between Joshua and former champion Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs):
“We have another fight planned with Riyadh Season and Turki Al ash-Sheikh – Dubois is part of that plan, but it could also be Fury or another heavyweight.
We dreamed of winning tonight and facing the winner of the Usyk-Fury rematch, but now, if Fury loses that rematch, we might arrange a fight with him,” Hearn revealed.
As a reminder, Daniel Dubois knocked out Anthony Joshua with knockdowns in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds. After the final knockdown, Joshua couldn’t rise before the referee’s count. KO 5.
