Sean Gibbons, the promoter of the newly crowned WBA super lightweight champion Isaac Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs), is confident they no longer need the current WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis for a rematch.
"There was no point in Gervonta fighting Cruz until he had a belt. Now he has one. We're not calling out Gervonta for a fight. We're not chasing him. People keep asking me about him. It's not about Gervonta. We don't need him in the sense that Cruz can headline his own event. If Gervonta wants to make it the next fight – great. If not – we'll come up with an exciting defense and what to do next. We know Cruz can be the main star at the T-Mobile Arena. That's what he did tonight with 14,726 people in the building.
You know the business. You know the promoters. You know who Teofimo Lopez is with (promoter Bob Arum), you know who Subriel Matias is with (promoter Eddie Hearn), you know who Devin Haney is with (Eddie Hearn).
If Ryan Garcia wins – that's a good fight. If Gervonta Davis wins – that too. These are the easiest fights. Matias would get destroyed.
Devin Haney is a fantastic fighter, but who wants to watch him try to outbox Cruz? We want guys to come to fight. Rolando came not to fight. You saw that. After Cruz landed – the bike was ridden.
Cruz is the Mexican Mike Tyson. Every punch he throws is with bad intentions. He doesn’t throw often, but he knows what he's doing. He's not just swinging wildly. He makes smart moves.
I'd say a star was born. The first night of Premier Boxing Champions on Prime Video captured that. It's so refreshing," Gibbons said.
Gervonta and Cruz fought in December 2021 – Davis won by judges' decision, injuring his hand during the fight. On the night of March 30 to 31, Cruz defeated Rolando Romero (15-2, 13 KOs) by technical knockout in the 8th round.
