Expert: "For Crawford, It's Either Canelo or Nothing"

Former world champion and now boxing analyst Chris Algieri is convinced that WBA super welterweight (up to 69.9 kg) champion Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) has no interest in unifying titles with WBC and WBO titleholder Sebastian Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs).

The American expert believes that Crawford is currently eyeing only one fight—a bout with WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight (up to 76.2 kg) champion Saúl Álvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs).

"I don’t see Crawford taking on a big 198-cm super welterweight after such a tough fight against Israil Madrimov in his debut in the division. He’s really aiming for a fight with Canelo.

As for the motivation to fight Fundora, I just don’t see Crawford doing it at this stage. I think for Crawford, it's either Canelo or nothing, because he’s looking for legacy-defining, big-money fights. And that’s completely understandable, given what he’s accomplished in his career.

Regarding Fundora’s claims that he wants to fight Crawford—that doesn’t matter. He’ll fight whoever they put in front of him. He’s not in a position to be picky. And right now, it seems all roads lead to Errol Spence,” Algieri said to Probox TV.

It’s worth noting that at the end of August, the WBO officially mandated Fundora to defend his titles against Crawford. However, Sebastian’s promoter, Samson Lewkowicz, claims that Terence’s team hasn’t reached out for negotiations. The WBO has given the fighters 30 days to agree to the fight, or a purse bid will be scheduled.
