Chavez Believes Canelo Isn't Avoiding Benavidez

In an interview with the YouTube channel Fight Hub TV, Julio Cesar Chavez stated that the undisputed super middleweight champion (up to 76.2 kg) Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) is not running away from WBC "interim" champion David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs).

"Well, I don't know if Saúl is avoiding Benavidez. He's not running from anyone. They are just at different stages, but sooner or later, they will have to meet. Everyone wants to see that fight, right? However, it's up to Saúl. What Canelo has done is incredible, and I can't speak badly about him because he has always treated me with respect. The guy has earned everything he has and has the right to fight whoever he wants. Let the sanctioning bodies decide if they need to mandate the fight with the official contenders," said Chavez.

Canelo previously announced that his next fight will take place on May 4, and the opponent will not be the Mexican. Jermall Charlo is mentioned as the most likely opponent.

Recently, the head of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaiman, mentioned that David would be appointed the official challenger for a fight against Álvarez.
