WBA, WBO, and WBC super middleweight champion (up to 76.2 kg) Saúl Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) expressed his disappointment with WBC interim light heavyweight champion (up to 79.4 kg) David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) after Benavidez’s victory over former WBC light heavyweight champion, Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs).
"I think this is his weight class – light heavyweight. And you saw that he struggled. He couldn’t do much against a fighter who retired in 2019.
It’s different when you’re in your natural weight class and fighting guys your own size," Álvarez said.
Benavidez defeated Gvozdyk by unanimous decision. After the fight, Benavidez had to choose whether to stay in super middleweight or light heavyweight, as he held interim WBC titles in both divisions. Benavidez chose light heavyweight, where he could fight for the undisputed world championship if he wins his fight on December 14.
