On the night of September 15 in Las Vegas, USA, Mexican WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion (up to 76.2 kg) Saúl Álvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) defended his titles against Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs). The fight lasted all 12 rounds, ending with a unanimous decision in favor of the reigning champion.
After the fight, Canelo reflected on his victory and future plans:
"I put on a great performance. And what will the haters say now? I fought younger fighters, even though they always claim I fight older ones. They always have something to say. I’m the best fighter in the world...
The fight could have ended in the third round, but [trainer] Eddie Reynoso slowed me down, and it worked. I put on a great show for my people.
Berlanga? He said he respects me a lot and apologized for his behavior. He performed well... I got a little angry. I’m Mexican, my friend.
This victory means a lot. I feel great, I’m grateful. It’s an honor to represent my country on this day—Mexico’s Independence Day. I’m proud of that. Some say you don’t love me, but you know what? You’re here to support me. Viva Mexico, cabrones!
I’m going to rest, enjoy time with my family, and then decide what to do next," Canelo said.
Edgar Berlanga also shared his thoughts on the fight, expressing respect for his opponent:
"Today I fought a legend, and I hope this is the beginning of my journey to becoming a future legend. In the third round, I took his hardest shot. It knocked me off balance, but I came back. I can take those shots and respond. I could have done a lot more, but I fought a legend, my friend. Hats off to him and all of Mexico.
I told Canelo he’s my idol. I’ve always admired him. It was uncomfortable that we had to show hostility toward each other when we first met. I grew up watching his fights. He’s at a level where he can choose his opponents—he’s the king. I just want to thank him for choosing me," Berlanga said.
