Berlanga – Contender for Morrell's Title, Not Canelo's

WBA (World Boxing Association) President Gilberto Mendoza has clarified which title Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) is aiming for after his victory over Padraig McCrory (18-1, 9 KOs).

The win positions him as the mandatory challenger for the WBA "regular" title held by David Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs) in the super middleweight division (up to 168 lbs), not the WBA "super champion" title owned by Saúl Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs).

On February 24th, Edgar Berlanga secured a technical knockout in the sixth round against Padraig McCrory, after which he expressed a desire to face Canelo.

Morrell claimed his title in June 2021 against Mario Cazares (12-1, 5 KOs) and has since defended it five times. David last entered the ring in December of the previous year, winning by technical knockout against Sena Agbeko (28-3, 22 KOs).
