Former British champion Tony Bellew has reacted to the news that the International Boxing Federation (IBF) plans to strip the undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) of his title.
"This is why my great sport keeps shooting itself in the foot. Why should Usyk vacate the title? He is the best heavyweight in the world and has just proven it. Let him have a rematch or fight the best contender. It’s really that simple. Outraged by the sport’s policy," Bellew wrote.
It is expected that the IBF will strip Usyk of the title. The belt will be up for grabs in a fight between mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic and Daniel Dubois. They are set to meet on June 1. Following this, Anthony Joshua, the next highest-ranked IBF boxer after Hrgovic, could challenge the winner.
