According to ESPN, the undisputed world champion at super middleweight (up to 76,2 kg), Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), is set to face the holder of the WBC Silver title, Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs). The fight is slated for May 4th in Las Vegas, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.
British promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed the negotiations for such a bout in a comment to MMA Fighting, expressing his dream to reunite with Alvarez:
"It would be a dream to bring him back to Matchroom and DAZN. I would love to work with him until the end of his career," Hearn declared.
Meanwhile, Munguia's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, on the MMA Hour podcast, stated that there's no chance for such a meeting on May 4th.
– Is there a chance to see Munguia vs. Canelo on May 4th?
– No.
– No chance at all?
– No.
– Absolutely zero?
– I believe so.
– Why?
– Well, I just think so.
Previously, Alvarez ended his cooperation with the promotional company PBC, partly because the parties could not agree on a fight against Jermall Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs).
Following the termination of his agreement with PBC, Alvarez's potential opponents, besides Munguia, include Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs).
