Both fighters entered the ring with strong momentum: Ramirez claimed his WBA title in March by defeating Arsen Goulamirian, becoming the first Mexican champion in cruiserweight history. Meanwhile, Billam-Smith avenged his sole career loss to Richard Riakporhe in June.
