Sean George, the trainer of Chinese heavyweight Zhang Zhilei (27-2-1, 22 KOs), has stated that his fighter has never avoided a bout with Congolese contender Martin Bakole (21-1, 16 KOs).
George also revealed that the 41-year-old veteran hopes to step into the ring against Ukrainian WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) by late 2025.
“Zhang is focused on business right now (his fight against Agit Kabayel, for instance). Martin Bakole talks a lot, trying to boost his value. He had the chance to fight Agit but overestimated himself, and now he’s calling out Zhang?
Zhang doesn’t avoid anyone—he’ll fight anyone, and his opportunity will come. We want Oleksandr Usyk at the end of 2025,” George stated.
In June, Zhang defeated Deontay Wilder via 5th-round technical knockout. His next opponent is Agit Kabayel, scheduled for February 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
In August, Martin Bakole scored a 5th-round knockout victory over Jared Anderson. His next opponent is expected to be Efe Ajagba, although the fight has yet to be officially announced.
On December 21, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury in their rematch by unanimous decision, retaining his titles.
