Promoter Eddie Hearn is unsure about a fight between WBA three-weight world champion Jervonta Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) and Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs).
“Honestly, he [Ryan Garcia] was too passive, and I think if Gervonta Davis comes out strong [against Hector Luis Garcia], that will give him a lot of momentum going into the fight [with Ryan].
The contract for the [Tanka vs. Ryan] fight is signed? I do not even know. These two guys, they're everywhere. I think now the situation is 50/50 that the fight will take place at all."
In the last fight, Garcia defeated Javier Fortuna early. The fight was stopped in the sixth round after another knockdown by Ryan.
Jervonta Davis fought his last fight at the end of May, defeating compatriot Rolando Romero to defend the belt of the regular WBA lightweight champion.
On January 7 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, Davis is scheduled to fight Dominican Hector Garcia in the main event of the evening of the Premier Boxing Champions. In the undercard of the evening, the fight of the Ukrainian champion Karen Chukhadjian will take place.
The fight with Garcia should be Davis' second in 2023. The fight with Ryan is scheduled for April 15 in Las Vegas. At the same time, Garcia refused an intermediate fight with the Filipino Mercito Gesta. The fight in the first welterweight was planned to be held in the American Phoenix on January 28.
However, both fights for the WBA champion are on the verge of collapse. Recently, Gervonta was arrested in Florida - the boxer was accused of causing bodily harm and domestic violence. Davis was released shortly after the court hearing on $1,000 bail.
