Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) says he is prepared to face current WBA, WBC, WBO & IBO title-holder Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs).
“If Usyk is still in shape when the moment arrives, that’s the obvious choice. I think it would be incredible. I’ll fight him if he’s ready. But this year is no longer relevant for many people, us included. Next year could be full of surprises.
He once said he wanted to face me, and I hope he still feels that way. What he has done is beautiful, and I’m happy for him. He came in and got opportunities I couldn’t get because I was too dangerous.
I rooted for Usyk in the fights with Fury. I knew what he could do and how skilful he is. Before the first fight I told people Usyk would win because of his style. I took a side, and it had nothing to do with my rivalry with Fury. After he beat him the first time, I knew the second would be easier. I’m happy for Usyk.”
Wilder’s next bout is set for 27 June in the United States against Tyrell Herndon. A detailed preview of that matchup can be found at the link.
