President of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Paco Valcarcel explained in detail to World Boxing News that the Organization will sanction the rematch between heavyweight champions Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, despite possible decisions by other organizations.
"Adhering to the agreements we reached with the teams of Usyk and Fury, as well as in favor of boxing fans worldwide, the WBO has reserved the right to sanction the rematch.
After the rematch, the WBO champion must face the 'interim' champion," Valcarcel stated.
Earlier, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman also stated that the rematch, stipulated in the contract between Usyk and Fury, will be sanctioned by their organization.
However, there are doubts regarding the International Boxing Federation (IBF) at the moment. According to the IBF regulations, they do not support mandatory rematches and have a practice where champions were left without a title due to this clause. This was the case with Terence Crawford, who could not have his mandatory defense against Jaron Ennis due to the rematch clause with Errol Spence. As a result, Crawford was left without a title, and Ennis was appointed the champion.
Earlier, there was information that for the IBF title, which will become vacant in the event of a rematch between Usyk and Fury, Anthony Joshua would fight against the winner of the DuBois – Hrgovic pair, which has not been officially announced yet.
