WBO president Gustavo Olivieri shared his thoughts on the decision by Ukrainian former undisputed Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk to declare his title vacant. As a result, the organization elevated the now former interim belt-holder Fabio Wardley to full champion — the same fighter Usyk was due to face.
“It was unexpected. But Usyk is a former undisputed Champion at Cruiserweight, an undisputed Champion at Heavyweight. The first belt of his career was the WBO title. He is an incredible champion both in the ring and outside it — a true gentleman and an ambassador of the sport.
Yes, the decision was unexpected. After consulting with his team, he decided to explore other professional opportunities. And we respect that decision — he has earned that respect. As you remember, Oleksandr was supposed to defend the belt against Fabio Wardley, but his team decided to go a different route — it’s a professional decision.
I wish Oleksandr all the best. The doors of the WBO are always open for him and his team. It’s a great honor for us to have a champion like Oleksandr Usyk in our family,” said Olivieri.
It remains unknown what Oleksandr’s next fight will be. However, he has stated that he does not intend to retire at this time.
