Gustavo Olivieri, President of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), confirmed that the body will decide on Monday regarding the request from undisputed Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk to extend negotiations for his mandatory defense against interim champion Joseph Parker, reports Tribuna.com.
“Usyk has requested more time to continue negotiations for the fight with Parker, and the Committee will make a decision this coming Monday,” Olivieri stated.
Earlier, it was reported that Usyk appealed to the WBO for additional time to finalize a deal with his mandatory challenger due to injury.
On July 24, the organization sanctioned the fight and set a 30-day deadline for reaching an agreement, which has now expired. Should the extension request be denied, the WBO will call a purse bid.
On July 19, Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) stopped Daniel Dubois in the fifth round, becoming undisputed champion for the third time in his career.
In February, Joseph Parker (36-3, 24 KOs) scored a second-round TKO over Martin Bakole.
