WBC Suspends Ryan Garcia for Racist Remarks

The President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaiman, announced the suspension of Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) from any activity within the WBC. This decision follows several Twitter posts by Garcia containing offensive remarks towards Black and Muslim individuals, including a statement saying, "I propose to resurrect George Floyd and kill him again." George Floyd's murder sparked a wave of protests in the USA.

"Exercising my authority as WBC president, I hereby suspend Ryan Garcia from any activity within our organization. We reject all forms of discrimination. I fear for Ryan's well-being, as he has declined numerous offers of our help with mental health and substance abuse issues," Sulaiman wrote.

Ryan's family stated they do not share his views. "Our son recently made statements that do not reflect his true character or our family's beliefs. Our family unequivocally does not support any of his remarks regarding race or religion—this is not who Ryan truly is or how he was raised. Those who know Ryan can attest to this. Ryan has openly spoken about his long-standing struggle with mental health over the years, and as a family, we are committed to ensuring and encouraging him to get the help he needs to overcome this very challenging time and to ensure both his immediate and long-term well-being. We are grateful for the continued support, prayers, and compassion," the family's statement read.

Previously, Ryan announced his retirement from boxing. Shortly after, Garcia received a one-year suspension from boxing, a $1.1 million fine, and his victory over Devin Haney was declared a no-contest.
