The World Boxing Council (WBC) has officially sanctioned a bout between American Ricardo Sandoval (27-2, 18 KOs), the reigning WBA and WBC World Champion at Flyweight (up to 50.8 kg), and Britain’s Galal Yafai (9-1, 7 KOs).
As a result, the organization has rescinded its previous order for Yafai to rematch Mexico’s Francisco Rodriguez (40-6-1, 27 KOs).
On June 21, Rodriguez defeated Yafai via unanimous decision, but later tested positive for a banned substance. Initially, the WBC accepted Rodriguez’s explanation that the prohibited substance had been ingested unintentionally and ordered a rematch.
However, on July 30, Ricardo Sandoval defeated Kenshiro Teraji by split decision, claiming the WBA and WBC Flyweight titles — leading the WBC to move forward with sanctioning Sandoval vs Yafai.
