The World Boxing Council (WBC) has unveiled a new special belt – the WBC Tamaulipas Belt. This belt is crafted to honor and celebrate participants of significant bouts taking place on important dates for Mexico: May 5th, commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, and September 16th, Mexico’s Independence Day.
Over 15 Mexican artisans participated in the creation of the Tamaulipas Belt, which is made from fine suede and features leather embroidery that represents the flora and vegetation of the Tamaulipas fields. A traditional bone button named "Tarugos" adds authentic Mexican character to the belt.
Named after the state of Tamaulipas, known for its rich culture and what are considered some of the most beautiful traditional costumes in Mexico.
This belt will be at stake in the upcoming bout between the champion of WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF in the super middleweight division (up to 76.2 kg) Saul Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) and Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), set for May 4th in Las Vegas, USA. This will be the first fight for Canelo Alvarez against a fellow Mexican since 2017.
