Frank Warren, head of Queensberry Promotions, has clarified the contractual issues surrounding the upcoming fight between Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron, scheduled for April 20.
"BOXXER sent two different contracts to two fighters. Liam received a contract for a 12-round fight, and that’s reflected in the agreement signed by all parties, including BOXXER. From what I understand, Whittaker was sent a contract for 10 rounds. In our view, this fight should be 12 rounds — that’s what we signed for.
If they want to renegotiate and offer financial compensation, and Liam is satisfied with that, then it can be a 10-round fight. As far as I’m concerned, they should stick to 12 rounds. I’ve never heard anything like this before. It’s amateurish.
Sometimes lawyers make mistakes when drafting contracts, but in boxing, the number of rounds is crucial. There was never any doubt during negotiations — this was always a 12-round fight. If that’s not the case, what’s going on? Are BOXXER, Shalom, or whoever, signing contracts without even reading them?" said Warren.
The first fight between Whittaker and Cameron ended in a technical draw after Whittaker suffered an injury when both fighters fell out of the ring.
