Ward to Canelo: "You're Losing Me as a Fan"

In an interview with Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM, former two-division champion Andre Ward took aim at the undisputed super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), suggesting that he's avoiding a fight with David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs).

"His record? It can be viewed in different ways. You can see that there are many well-known fighters there. But then you look at where he fought them and when he fought them. Take Kovalev, for instance. By the time he fought him, Kovalev was no longer the 'Krusher'. He was not the invincible fighter he once was.

When you say, 'I'm number one in the world,' you lose me as a fan at that moment. You lose me as a fan when you refuse to fight the best in the world, yet demand others to fight the strongest. Canelo is a good fighter. But to claim the title of the best, you need to fight the best. I'm not saying every fight has to be against the best. That would be foolish and dangerous. There need to be intermediate fights as well. But if all of them turn into intermediate ones, then… You get what I'm saying…", Ward expressed.

It was officially announced yesterday that Canelo's next opponent will be Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs). The show is scheduled for May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, USA.

The event will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video and DAZN on a PPV basis.

Canelo Alvarez last stepped into the ring in September of the previous year against Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) and secured a victory by unanimous decision.

Jaime Munguia took care of John Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs) by technical knockout in January 2024.
