Usyk on War: "People See It on TV, But They Can’t Imagine How Terrifying It Really Is"

WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) opened up about the war in Ukraine and its impact on his life.

– Our army continues to defend our country, our guys are fighting for freedom from the enemy, and I am grateful to them for that.

I don’t think there are words that can truly express how much we appreciate what they are doing.

How has the war personally affected you?

– It’s horrible. My people are dying, rockets are flying over our heads. People see this on TV, but they can’t imagine how terrifying it really is.

How do you handle the pressure of being a symbol of hope for your people?

– I thank God every day. If He gave me these trials, it means I can overcome them.

You joined Ukraine’s Territorial Defense at the start of the war. How did that change your perspective on Ukraine’s future?

– I am certain Ukraine will rebuild and become strong. I’m a true optimist, and I know that our country will reach a high level.

Russia’s hybrid war against Ukraine began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion, attacking Ukraine from multiple directions, including from Belarus.

Every day, hundreds of drones and missiles strike Ukrainian cities. Over the course of the war, tens of thousands of civilians have become victims of Russia’s unprovoked aggression.
