3 Reasons to Watch Canelo vs. Munguia According to Oscar De La Hoya

On May 4th in Las Vegas, USA, Mexican super middleweight (up to 76,2 kg) absolute champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will defend his title against fellow countryman Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs).

Jaime's promoter and founder of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, shared his expectations for the fight, confidently stating that the torch will be passed to a younger generation, describing Canelo as a museum exhibit.

"Three reasons why you should watch the Canelo vs. Munguia fight live: an anticipated and spectacular bout, two elite Mexican boxers inside the ring, and the passing of the torch. Jaime Munguia will defeat him. Canelo chose my fighter for the Cinco de Mayo holiday bout. He is a beast, but I think it's a change of reign.

Understand me correctly, Canelo is a great fighter. He has fought everyone, but there comes a time when every fighter begins to decline. Everyone has their shelf life. Alvarez has undergone knee and shoulder surgeries. He had a tough fight against John Ryder—a guy Munguia knocked out.

Would I say the same if I were still Saul's promoter? Yes. Munguia is 27, Canelo is 34, and I think it's a generational change. Am I calling for Canelo to retire? No, not until he fights Jaime. I really want Munguia to kick his ass. The younger generation needs to overthrow the old. It must happen," said De La Hoya.

Oscar De La Hoya was Canelo Alvarez's promoter, but in November 2020, the parties decided to end their collaboration.
