On the night of August 11 in Las Vegas, USA, Serhii Bohachuk (24-2, 23 KOs) was unable to defend his interim WBC super welterweight title (up to 69.9 kg) against American Vergil Ortiz (22-0, 21 KOs).
The bout ended with Ortiz winning by majority decision, although the Ukrainian knocked his opponent down twice during the fight. After the fight, Ortiz shared his emotions about the victory.
"I felt I did enough. I proved to everyone who said I was no longer the same, that I couldn't box at super welterweight, that I couldn't go the distance, that they were wrong. All of that fueled me. I am now the best in the world, and I will continue to prove it.
I am ready for the challenge. I think 'Bud' (Terence Crawford) is probably the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, and I want to show that I have everything it takes to beat him," Ortiz said.
Serhii Bohachuk also commented on his defeat, believing he was the better fighter.
"I can only say one thing: people saw the fight today. Those who know boxing understand what happened. I am happy because I felt great in the ring. It was a great fight. I believe I won. I scored two knockdowns, guys, stop it," Bohachuk said.
