“This Is My Rome.” Jai Opetaia and David Nyika Talk Before the Fight

IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs) and challenger David Nyika (10-0, 9 KOs) spoke ahead of their showdown.

Jai Opetaia:I’ve done enough. I’m going into this fight with full confidence. I know what he can bring. We’re fully prepared for anything he shows. Your opponent isn’t your enemy. I know David. He’s a good guy, but right now he’s standing in my way.

I have a lot of things I need to accomplish. So many people rely on me. And he’s an obstacle I have to remove. I have to win. It’s very important. My whole life has been shaped for moments like this. He talks about fate and a third chance. But this is my life. I don’t know anything else. Victory is my only option. I’m going to knock him out.

David Nyika:You’re a big part of my story. This is a huge opportunity, and the fact the fight is happening here at home is incredible. It’s a dream come true, but a dream stays a dream until you make that decisive step. I train every day. I’m doing everything I can to be in peak shape for moments like this. This is my Rome, my imperial conquest—to defeat the best of the best,” said Nyika.

The bout between Jai Opetaia and David Nyika will take place on January 8 in Broadbeach, Australia. A link to detailed stats and analysis of the upcoming fight can be found here.
