The Best I Fought: Manny Pacquiao

The world champion in eight weight classes, Filipino Manny Pacquiao, shared with The Ring magazine about the best opponents he has faced and explained why he chose these fighters.

Best Jab – Oscar De La Hoya

His jab was a tactical weapon. He could use it to set up a heavy hit or employ the jab itself as the weapon.

Best Puncher – Miguel Cotto

I can still feel some of the punches he landed on me. Being backed into the ropes is not the best place when fighting him. Plus, he's accurate. He's incredible.

Fastest Hands – Lehlo Ledwaba

His hands were on fire.

Fastest Feet – Oscar De La Hoya

He moves so fast and smoothly. Oscar is a complete athlete.

Smartest – Miguel Cotto

It was tough to lure him in, to deceive him. He saw it all. I really had to work; he made me do it.

Best Chin – Antonio Margarito

That fight was a war. It was brutal. I threw everything at him, and not only did he take it, but he also came back every time. Incredible.

Strongest – Antonio Margarito

Big and strong. His body shots did significant damage to me several times.

Best Defense – Joshua Clottey

But it wasn’t the best action for the fans.

Best Skill Set – Juan Manuel Marquez

He's the only fighter who could truly understand me and predict my moves. He's a brilliant counter-puncher and an unparalleled warrior.

The Best

Several. I can't pick just one. Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Erik Morales—all had extraordinary skills. They commanded respect because they were versatile. I had to be on my toes and fully focused with them because they were very dangerous in the ring.

Pacquiao's last fight was in 2021, losing to Yordenis Ugas. It is expected that Manny will return in 2024 for a fight against Conor Benn.
