The current WBO world champion in the light welterweight division (up to 63.5 kg), Teofimo Lopez (20-0, 13 KOs), has mentioned the possibility of leveraging his "super champion" status within the WBO to secure a bout against the WBO, WBA, and WBC welterweight champion (up to 66.67 kg) Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs).
The super champion status allows its holder to immediately claim a championship fight in a new weight category. If such a right is exercised, the "super champion" either boxes against the current champion or faces a contender if the belt is vacant.
"Crawford is just a person like me. We are the same. He's just uglier," Lopez commented to Punsh Deunk Boxing.
In his last fight, Teofimo defeated Jemaine Ortiz by judges' decision and stated he is ready to face Terence Crawford in a catchweight bout.
