WBO Junior Welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez has reacted to the victory of interim WBC Junior Middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz over Erickson Lubin.
“I was a little surprised by how it went. I thought the fight would last a bit longer, but he acted decisively and finished it quickly. Obviously, Vergil has a lot of contenders watching him, and he showed them that he’s here at Junior Middleweight to stay.
Should fans be disappointed if Ortiz vs. Ennis isn’t next? At this point, people don’t really care — they just want to see them fight. But you heard Vergil at the press conference — he literally said: ‘I want all the belts.’ So that’s what he’s going for, and so is Ennis. He gave up all his titles to move to Junior Middleweight. So the belts matter to them, but the fans mainly want to see the best fight the best.
I think Lubin’s energy was gone already in the second round. Maybe because of the body shots. Vergil hits very hard to the body — that can take your legs instantly. And when you start leaning back — that’s exactly what Ortiz needs. If you stay defensive, he will break you — and that’s what happened. He really shook Lubin. Honestly, I haven’t seen anyone hit Lubin like that, except Charlo,” Lopez said.
On the night of November 9, Vergil Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) defeated Erickson Lubin (27-3, 19 KOs) by technical knockout in the second round. Fight statistics from Ready to Fight can be viewed at the link.
