WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez believes he is destined to fill the void left by Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez once the Mexican superstar retires.
"I feel like I will be the next face of Latino boxing after Canelo. While Canelo is the hope for the Mexican people, sorry—but God chose me.
When Saúl steps away, I will become the face of Latinos. And it’s perfect, because I speak more English now, but I will also start embracing my Spanish more.
I think big. I deserve this, I’m worth it, and I’ve earned it. But the most important thing is holding onto it. It’s much easier to reach the top than to stay there.
We’re seeing that right now in my division—a new champion just emerged with Gary Antuanne Russell winning the WBA super lightweight title," said Lopez.
Lopez's next fight is scheduled for May 2 against Arnold Barboza.
