WBC President Mauricio Suleiman emphasizes the necessity of implementing video technology, such as instant replays, in boxing matches. In a conversation with Gambling.com, Suleiman stated that he and his organization would "vigorously advocate for instant replays" in the upcoming fight between Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) and Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs).
The WBC has previously utilized instant replays in fights, such as the recent bout between Fury and Francis Ngannou (0-1). Suleiman mentioned the incident where Fury received a cut from a headbutt, which the referee failed to see, but the video replay clearly showed the injury was caused by a headbutt, not a punch. Suleiman argues that the use of technologies like instant replays can prevent disputes that could "destroy the sport."
"We started implementing instant replays 12 years ago. We have used them in Japan, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the United States, and any other major territory. We will vigorously fight to have instant replays for the Fury-Usyk fight and promote the technology in all major fights. We must use the available resources and take the best from them," Suleiman said.
The fight for the undisputed heavyweight title (over 90.7 kg) between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is scheduled for May 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
