On the night from March 2nd to 3rd in Puerto Rico, 35-year-old IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO champion Amanda Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KOs) was set to defend her titles in a fight against 30-year-old German Nina Meinke (18-3, 4 KOs). However, the fight did not take place.
After the tournament had started, it was revealed that doctors had forbidden Serrano to box that evening due to an eye injury she sustained the day before.
"I wanted to fight. I wanted to fight in front of my people," Serrano stated, fighting back tears.
"I'm absolutely devastated. I hope for a speedy recovery for Amanda. We still want this fight," Meinke said.
Jake Paul, who also boxed that evening and serves as Serrano's promoter, explained the situation.
"Listen, I know people are booing, but Amanda came to fight. She had a tough camp, and the doctors wouldn't let her continue because of her eye. Her cornea was exposed; she failed the eye tests and did everything possible to make the fight happen. We support Amanda. It's emotionally difficult for her because she wanted to represent her country the most, and this night meant everything to her. This injury was incurred 36 hours before the fight. You can't go blind from one fight," said Paul.
According to a source close to the situation reported by BoxingScene, remnants of chemical hair treatment got into Serrano's eyes during a warm-up session that took place after the procedure. This is what damaged Amanda's eye.
