Sergey Lapin, the Sports Director for Oleksandr Usyk's team, recently voiced his take on the forthcoming bout between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou. He contends that their fight lacks the magnitude and prestige that a bout such as the one between Errol Spence and Terence Crawford holds, as they clash for the welterweight division title.
"When they meet this weekend, their fight of the highest caliber will cast a shadow of shame over Fury’s decision to chase money against Francis Ngannou, rather than unify the titles against Usyk."
"This is a decision that if not rectified will damage Fury’s legacy. Spence and Crawford is a legacy defining fight. They wanted to test themselves in the ring against the best possible opponent. Meanwhile, Fury and Ngannou belong in a circus tent, and the WBC title continues to be held captive," British Boxing News quoted Lapin as saying.
Lapin couldn't conceal his outrage at Fury's choice to face off with Ngannou rather than focusing his efforts on unifying the titles with Oleksandr Usyk. He underlined that such a move could seriously tarnish the legacy of the British champion.
Urging Fury to reassess his decision, Lapin implored him to shift his focus onto unifying the belts with Usyk, who currently boasts ownership of the WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight titles.
