The father of American boxer Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), Henry Garcia, admitted that he is worried about potential alcohol problems his son might have.
"I haven't spoken to Ryan in a long time. He talks more with his mother than with me. But that's okay, he'll call me when he wants to. I would like him to undergo some therapy when it comes to alcohol consumption. I'm a realist. He says he can control it. I hope that's true. But if he can't, he needs to undergo therapy so he can stop," said Garcia Sr. to Fight Hub TV.
However, Ryan Garcia insists that he has no issues with alcohol abuse.
"I don't even drink anymore. My dad doesn't know what he's talking about. I literally just spoke to him – and he apologized," Garcia wrote on Twitter.
It is worth noting that prior to his fight against Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), Ryan Garcia failed to make weight and did not contend for Haney's WBC title. Garcia won the fight but failed a pre-fight drug test, which found the banned substance Ostarine in his system. The B sample also came back positive. Haney's team demanded Garcia be disqualified and the result nullified. As a result, Ryan received a one-year suspension from boxing, a $1.1 million fine, and the fight was declared a no-contest.
