Fight Background

Every fight of Andy Ruiz Jr. after his two bouts with Anthony Joshua is perceived as a comeback. In 2019, the Mexican-American created one of the biggest upsets since Buster Douglas vs. Mike Tyson.

Back then, Joshua was supposed to fight Jarrell Miller. They had several stare-downs and scuffles but never made it to the ring as Miller tested positive for doping multiple times. Consequently, Miller faced a lengthy suspension, and Joshua needed a replacement opponent.

Less than a month before the fight, Andy Ruiz Jr. agreed to step in against Joshua. Despite the skepticism from fans and experts, Ruiz surprised everyone. After being knocked down, he got up and secured a stoppage victory.

Later that year, Ruiz faced Joshua again. This time, he trained even less and weighed more, failing to challenge the Brit, who outboxed him from a distance.

Since then, Andy has fought twice: in 2021 and 2022. Not much activity for a boxer considered among the heavyweight elite.

His next opponent also had a long break from boxing, sharing more than one topic for conversation – including Anthony Joshua. Between 2018 and 2022, Miller did not box at all due to failed doping tests. Since his return, he has had four fights, with the biggest win being against Lucas Browne. This speaks volumes about the current level of the American, as Browne in 2023 is far from a competitive benchmark.

Miller’s next fight was against Daniel Dubois. They fought in Saudi Arabia on the undercard of Joshua vs. Wallin, and it was a show full of exchanges. Overall, Dubois looked more precise, leading to the outcome – Dubois won by TKO in the 10th round, handing Miller his first career loss.

Key Facts Before the Fight

- In the ring, the boxers are expected to weigh not much less, if not more, than 270 kg combined. Andy Ruiz's Jr. average weight is about 120 kg (he weighed 121.9 kg before his last fight). Jarrell Miller’s average weight is around 150 kg (he weighed 155.6 kg before the Dubois fight).

- Andy Ruiz is the shortest opponent Miller has faced since 2018, when he knocked out Tomasz Adamek in the 2nd round – a former world champion in two weight classes.

In terms of Miller’s physical stats – his height (193 cm) and reach (198 cm) are similar to Ruiz's previous opponent Luis Ortiz. However, Ortiz is typically lighter by about 40 kg compared to Miller.

- Miller is undoubtedly the heaviest opponent in Ruiz’s career. But Andy is one of the two most experienced opponents for Miller. The biggest names on Jarrell’s resume are Tomasz Adamek, Mariusz Wach, Gerald Washington, Lucas Browne, Bogdan Dinu, and Daniel Dubois.

Andy has faced Anthony Joshua, Luis Ortiz, had a Mexican brawl against former title contender Chris Arreola, and nearly defeated Joseph Parker.
