WBA regular welterweight champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17–2, 13 KOs) has expressed interest in a blockbuster fight with eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao (62–8–2, 39 KOs), calling it a bout that could define his legacy.
“Will I be remembered for beating Jaron Ennis? Or for beating Manny Pacquiao?
Which one is the bigger fight in the world of boxing?”
While acknowledging Ennis’ talent, Romero made it clear where his priorities lie:
“To be honest, I don’t think Ennis stays at welterweight for long. He’s a big dude.
Ennis is a great fighter, don’t get me wrong. But that fight doesn’t make noise. I’ve got bigger options.
I’ll fight Pacquiao. He’s coming back for a reason. For me, that’s a fight for legacy.”
Romero also reflected on his move up in weight and how it’s impacted his style:
“I should’ve moved to welterweight a long time ago.
How is it that I move up and become more explosive and faster? It doesn’t even make sense — I should be slower.
You never saw me box early in my career because I was just knocking everyone out.
I’ve always been focused — but lately, I’ve matured a lot.”
On May 2, Romero scored a unanimous decision win over Ryan Garcia, including a knockdown in the second round, to claim the WBA belt.
