Renowned American trainer Freddie Roach discussed how well his fighter, Mexican Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), is prepared for his fight against super middleweight undisputed champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs).
"I've done two training camps with Munguia. First of all, he's the best student in the world—he listens very carefully, and I worked on his defense and attack, and he became a more complete fighter. I hate when people say he doesn't have any defense. They talk nonsense.
If he had no defense, he wouldn't have any attack either. He's a good fighter, listens very carefully. I trained him hard, everything went well.
Alvarez has very common combinations. He throws a left hook to the body, left hook to the head. Every time. Every time you miss one punch, another one comes. If he hits the head, I'll be drilling my fighter.
Munguia has to keep working his jab and keep throwing jabs. He won't win with two punches, but if he hits with two or three punches and pins the opponent to the ropes, and then hits the body and head with the right hand... then this guy will be taking punches the whole fight," Roach said.
The fight between Canelo and Munguia will take place on May 4th. The weigh-in results were announced recently.
