Shawn Gibbons, advisor to former eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs), revealed that the 46-year-old icon could finally land his long-sought clash with Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs), the current WBA lightweight champion — if he defeats WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) on July 19.
“It’s been a long road, but we’re here now. We wanted the Conor Benn fight, we wanted Gervonta Davis, but Manny had one focus.
The WBC title (in welterweight — ed.) was his very first world title, and now this could be a full-circle moment — winning another WBC belt. And it won’t be the last.
When he beats Mario Barrios — get ready, because his dream fight is Gervonta Davis. He really loves the idea.
He’s been trying to make that fight happen for years. Gervonta kept saying he didn’t want to fight at 145 pounds (around 65.8 kg). Then he turns around and gets worked over by Lamont Roach.
So if Manny wins that belt, we’re in for an amazing ride,” Gibbons said.
The fight between Manny Pacquiao and Mario Barrios is scheduled for July 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, USA.
