Promoter Oscar De La Hoya commented on his client Ryan Garcia's (25-1, 20 KOs) victory over WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KOs).
"It was an amazing week for boxing. Imagine if every fighter was like Ryan, boxing would again be the best sport in the world. When you have such personalities, when you have people like Ryan who know how to fight and are charismatic, it's very enjoyable to watch. I'm getting calls from all over the world telling me how incredible it was. I haven't seen anything like this since the times when Tyson fought, when I fought. People were very, very interested, and they were applauding – they love Ryan.
I think Ryan is now riding not just a wave of success but also of confidence. He now knows he belongs with the best, and now we know it too. I mean, he beat and destroyed Devin Haney. That fight wasn't even close or competitive. It was annihilation. So, we have to give Ryan Garcia his due," said Oscar.
On April 21st, Ryan Garcia defeated Devin Haney. Despite the loss, Devin remains the WBC champion since Ryan did not make the weight limit and was not eligible for the title.
